Ardbeg is a distillery that captivates the imagination. This applies to all whisky made on Islay This small island in the Atlantic Ocean is responsible for some of the best whiskies in the world. The smoky single malt from Ardbeg certainly belongs to that category. Take a look around our extensive range. We have competitive prices and definitely have something delicious in stock for you.
Ardbeg lies lonely in a small inlet on the southern coast of Islay, not far from Lagavulin and Laphroaig. Once there was illegal whisky distillation there, when smugglers took advantage of the remote location and great conditions for making whisky. Eventually, the smugglers made way for a legitimate operation. In 1815, the Ardbeg distillery as we know it today was established by John McDougal.
Ardbeg was forced to close its doors in 1981. It wasn't until 1989 that production was resumed on a small scale, but things really got back on track when Glenmorangie took over the distillery in 1997. Since then, Ardbeg has been racking up successes. Both the Ardbeg Ten and Ardbeg Uigeadail were named whisky of the year by expert and whisky writer Jim Murray.
The distinctive oily mouthfeel of Ardbeg is a result of a so-called 'purifier'. This pipe is located at the top of the still and captures the heavier alcohol components during distillation. These are then returned to the bottom of the still, allowing for extra contact with the copper of the still. This purifier is not used by any other distillery on Islay.
Once a year it is Ardbeg Day. This festive day is celebrated during the Feis Ile festival and always falls at the end of May or the beginning of June. At the distillery, Ardbeg fans gather, where they are entertained with music, activities, food, and of course whisky.
On Ardbeg Day, a new limited edition whisky is released annually. Whiskies that were previously released include the Blaaack, Dark Cove, Perpetuum, Kelpie, and Alligator. These special single malts are popular among fans of the brand and collectors.
Ardbeg is beloved for its rich, peaty single malts that whisky lovers around the world enjoy. Whether it's old whisky from the 1970s (which is truly legendary) or the 5-year-old Wee Beastie, Ardbeg always leaves you wanting more.
