Who is William Lawson?
That is a good question. Unlike some other big whisky names such asJohn Walker and John DewarThere is relatively little known about William Lawson. What we do know is that this Scotsman was born between 1853 and 1859. Afterwards, he emigrated to Ireland. In 1888, he worked as an export manager at a whisky company in Dublin. William Lawson was probably known as a skilled blender. Why else would there be a world-famous blended whisky named after him?
Not smoky & Macduff
William Lawson's prides itself on not using peated whisky in the recipe of its blend. They explicitly mention this on the official website. Rules? They don't seem to like those, they say at William Lawson's. And apparently, this includes that their whisky must not smell or taste of smoke. A choice that has turned out well in our opinion.
The heart of William Lawson's is made up of single malt whisky from Macduff. This distillery is located in the Scottish Highlands and is still relatively young. While many Scottish distilleries were founded centuries ago, Macduff has been around since 1963. The vast majority of whisky produced at Macduff ends up in blends. If you happen to come across it in the wild, it is probably under the name Deveron.
