History of William Grant & Sons
Most Scotch whisky is the product of large multinationals, but Grant's Whisky is still made by the same family business. William Grant & Sons owns a number of distilleries, of which Glenfiddich and Balvenie by far the most famous. That first one is even the most popular Scottish single malt in the world.
Building a whisky brand obviously does not come without struggles. William Grant also experienced this. In 1903, he employed his son-in-law Charles Gordon as a salesman. The marketing of their new blend initially proceeded slowly. It was only at the 181st door where Gordon knocked that he sold a box of Grant's Whisky.
From that point on, sales steadily increased. In America, Grant's became a popular whisky, especially after World War II. The distinctive triangular bottle (which is also Glenfiddich's trademark) was used for the first time in 1957. Today, Grant's Whisky is one of the most consumed blended Scottish whiskies in the world.
Is Grant's Whisky a single malt?
It is a question we get often and can answer easily. No, Grant's is not a single malt whisky but a blended whisky. Single malt is whisky made from malted barley at a single distillery in copper stills. Blended whisky consists of whisky from multiple distilleries. That whisky can be made from malted barley but also from other grains and does not have to be made in a copper still.
