About Glenkinchie
Glenkinchie, one of the few remaining distilleries in the Lowlands, is situated in the countryside among the barley fields about 30 kilometers from the busy capital and is hence referred to as 'The Edinburgh Malt'.
With only two Lowland distilleries in production, Glenkinchie™ single malt whisky is the undisputed champion in the light Lowland category. Due to its interesting visitor center and atmospheric location, it is ideal for contemporary tourists for a first visit to a distillery. Each year, over 40,000 visitors come, keeping Glenkinchie a part of life in Edinburgh.
To the south and east of Edinburgh, where the high green Lammermuir Hills roll towards the Firth of Forth, lies the agricultural region of East Lothian.
In this 'Garden of Scotland', fields full of barley grow, irrigated by water that trickles down from the hills.
This gold-colored barley was destined for the Glenkinchie distillery when local farmers John and George Rate became the first official license holders in 1837. They ceased operations in 1853, but production resumed in 1890 when a consortium of wine merchants and blenders from Edinburgh and Leith revived Glenkinchie Distillery Co. Ltd.
Glenkinchie was eventually rebuilt as the typical Victorian distillers' village as we know it today: characteristic red brick buildings, staff housing, and even a bowling green.
Tradition is right at home here. For example, there are still six wooden washbacks used in the fermentation process, two made of Oregon pine and two made of larch from Canada.
The two enormous old copper stills are also very characteristic: they are among the largest in the industry, and together they account for a production of 1.3 million liters per year. Instead of a modern condenser, a cast iron worm tub is still used to cool the alcohol, giving the whisky more character and depth.
