The story of The Famous Grouse begins in 1800, when John Brown opened his grocery store in the Scottish city of Perth. A few decades later, it was John's in-laws who were at the helm of the company. Son-in-law Matthew Gloag knew his trade and soon became known for his incredible expertise in whisky and wine. In 1842, he even had the honor of catering a dinner for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
It was Matthew Gloag III who launched the first blended whisky in 1896. Shortly thereafter, The Famous Grouse also emerged. Matthew's daughter drew the pheasant, the red bird that still appears on every bottle of The Famous Grouse today.
The Famous Grouse is made by the same people who are also responsible for prestigious single malt whiskies such as Macallan and Highland ParkThere is a high chance that one or both of those whiskies are part of this famous blend, which is currently even the best-selling whisky in Scotland.
A great deal of importance is attached to the quality of the casks, as oak wood is of great value in making quality whisky. The casks come from both America (ex-bourbon casks) and Spain (ex-sherry casks). After a minimum aging of three years, the different malt whiskies are combined with grain whiskies.
That is a process that requires a lot of skill. It is the task of the master blender, someone with a genius sense of smell and taste, to ensure that The Famous Grouse always meets the highest quality standards. The exact recipe of The Famous Grouse is kept strictly confidential, but whiskies from Speyside, the Highlands, and Islay are all used.
When Matthew Gloag III introduced the very first The Famous Grouse to the market in the late 19th century, he could never have imagined that it would become such a huge success. More than 43 million bottles are sold every year, spread over 94 countries. Both advanced whisky drinkers and novice enthusiasts can indulge: just look at the selection in our webshop.
