Brora is one of the most legendary distilleries in Scotland, partly because it was closed for a long time. Whisky from Brora is therefore rare. But did you know that Brora was once called Clynelish? That's no joke, as the current Clynelish distillery has only existed since 1968.
However, the original Clynelish distillery was founded in 1819. Instead of upgrading this distillery in the 60s of the last century, the owners decided to build a completely new distillery and give it the same name. Initially, the old Clynelish was closed, but it reopened in 1969. However, under the name Brora, named after the nearby village.
Brora was reopened due to drought in Islay and the renovations at Caol Ila. Therefore, there was a shortage of smoky whisky at that time. Brora had to meet that demand. Ultimately, Brora closed its doors in 1983 due to a major crisis in the whisky industry.
But for whisky lovers, good news came in 2017: owner Diageo announced that the distillery would reopen. In the intervening period, Brora had become one of the most legendary Scottish whiskies ever.
There isn't much stock left, but thanks to the reopening, it can now be cautiously replenished. Whether the taste of the old Brora will be matched is a question that will only have an answer in many years.
To celebrate the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, Diageo and HBO released a series of limited edition whiskies in honor of the show. Each of the whiskies is paired with one of the iconic houses of Westeros.
Clynelish is not far from the North Sea coast in a green landscape with rolling hills. The surroundings are reminiscent of The Reach, the lush and fertile region of Westeros where House Tyrell reigns. Like House Tyrell, Clynelish should not be underestimated with its hidden complexity and combination of Highland and maritime aromas.
