About Balmenach

The Balmenach Distillery was established in 1824 by James McGregor. He was an illegal distiller from Tomintoul. Balmenach was soon taken over. James' son, James, continued to distill in a traditional manner. He had a railway line built to the distillery. This distillery was also closed during World War II. At that time, United Distillers was the owner. United Distillers closed the distillery in 1993 but in 1997 Inver House Distiller Ltd took over the distillery. Balmenach is not marketed as a single malt. We only see it sometimes in independent bottlings.
