A young distillery
Macduff is actually not that old yet. The 60th anniversary was celebrated in 2020, which is of course a respectable age. But considering the age of many other Scottish distilleries (sometimes more than 200 years), the age of Macduff is quite reasonable.
The distillery is located in the fishing village of the same name, Macduff, which means 'son of Duff'. Macduff was built in 1960, when the whisky industry was experiencing a massive growth period, and was designed by the famous architect William Delme-Evans. He is also the man who brought Tullibardine, Jura, and Glenallachie to life.
Over time, Macduff has slowly expanded production. Nowadays, there are 5 copper stills in operation. Notably, the condensers are horizontal. Macduff is one of only a handful of distilleries where this is the case. Due to this special intervention, there is more copper contact.
The Deveron or Glen Deveron?
It is a bit confusing that the single malt from Macduff is marketed under a different name. This choice was made by Martini Rossi, the former owner of the distillery. They chose to promote the whisky as Glen Deveron in Italy in the early '90s.
The latest bottlings from Macduff are promoted as The Deveron. This decision was made in 2014 by Bacardi, the current owner of the distillery. Nowadays, The Deveron is part of 'The Last Great Malts', a series of single malt whiskies from Bacardi's range. But although Macduff gets more attention as a single malt because of this, the distillery still mainly produces whisky for blends, for example, the world-famous William Lawson's.
