The age-old tradition of Belvedere Vodka
Although the Belvedere brand was founded in 1993, the Polmos Zyrardów distillery has existed for more than 100 years. The distillery is located parallel to the railway line between Warsaw and Vienna, which has existed since 1845. The place where the distillery is located was at that time a significant industrial city.
The two founders and brothers Dawid and Mejer Pines sold the distillery in 1932. Perhaps because they sensed that troubling times were ahead. Not long after the sale, the distillery was completely modernized, becoming one of the technologically advanced distilleries in Europe. However, World War II threw a spanner in the works.
For many years, the Polmos Zyrardów distillery was state-owned. When communism came to an end, the distillery sought a way to distinguish itself. The result was Belvedere Vodka, named after Palac Belwederski, a palace in Warsaw.
What is Belvedere Vodka made from?
For Belvedere, a special type of rye is used, the so-called Dańkowskie Gold. This type of rye has been cultivated for many years and grows perfectly in the fertile region west of Warsaw. Belvedere vodka is exclusively made from this type of rye at the Polmos Żyrardów distillery in Poland.
The first distillation of the rye takes place at several countryside distilleries. At the end of the communist era, there were about 900 of these types of distilleries, but now there are only about sixty left. These distilleries harvest the Dańkowskie Gold in July. It is then stored and distilled throughout the year.
Ultimately, this first distillate is transported to the Polmos Żyrardów distillery. Through a complicated process, the vodka is transformed there into the purest possible drink, but one that still has the character of the special type of rye. In total, Belvedere Vodka is distilled four times.
