South of the Equator
The name of 42 Below Vodka is based on the location of the distillery, which is located at the 42nd parallel south in New Zealand. This country is globally known for its stunning nature, which was so magnificently depicted in the Lord of the Rings films. Founder Geoff Ross had the brilliant idea in the '90s that such pure natural beauty was the perfect environment to also make a clear, fresh, pure vodka.
So said, so done. In 1996, Geoff Ross began distilling vodka in his garage with a still he had received from his wife. He was completely taken by his new hobby and quit his marketing job. It took a while before he had enough confidence in his distilling skills, but when friends started preferring his vodka over the alternatives available in stores, he knew it was time.
In 1999 he sold the very first bottle. After that, things moved quickly for Ross and his new vodka brand. Just a few years later, it became a publicly traded company in New Zealand. And in 2006, one of the largest beverage brands in the world, Bacardi, came knocking. Ross sold his company for tens of millions.
How is 42 Below Vodka made?
Originally, this vodka was made in a small still. But the brand has grown enormously, so that was no longer an option. Today, Geoff Ross's vodka is distilled 4 times in large distillation columns. This ensures a wonderfully pure result that blends seamlessly with the origin of this vodka. Wheat is the main ingredient, and it is grown in New Zealand.
