Zuidam Distillers is one of the last independent distilleries in the Netherlands that still manufactures and processes all its distillates and extracts in an artisanal manner within the family business. Based on pure natural raw materials, Zuidam creates a wide range of liqueurs, genevers, gin & whisky. Naturally, no artificial color, scent, or flavoring agents are used.
Unique in Dutch history, Millstone Dutch Single Malt Whisky. This Dutch whisky has been available since early 2007 in four countries including the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark & Japan. Zuidam started making the first batches as early as 1997. It was not until 2007 that Master Distiller Patrick van Zuidam was satisfied to launch the Millstone whisky on the market.
Zuidam Distillers was founded in the 1970s by Fred van Zuidam, the father of Patrick. He previously worked at De Kuijper in Schiedam, an ancient company that makes beautiful liqueurs. Fred brought that knowledge to his own business. On a piece of land in Baarle-Nassau, he built his modest distillery.
Given Fred's work history, it's no surprise that the focus was initially on making quality liqueurs. Only the best fresh ingredients were used. Fragrance, color, and flavor additives were taboo. That philosophy is still highly regarded under the leadership of Patrick van Zuidam.
Patrick is a big whisky lover, and his dream of distilling whisky himself came true in 1996. That year the first casks with whisky were filled. It took a while before the first bottles were filled. That only happened in 2007: that was when Zuidam's 5-year-old single malt hit the market. Patrick decided to name his whisky Millstone (molensteen). That name was chosen because the grains are ground with Dutch windmills.
The single malts from Millstone are un-Dutchly good and can compete with whisky from all over the world. The 10-year-old American Oak or French Oak fit in any liquor cabinet. But it is the Millstone 100 Rye with which Patrick van Zuidam achieves his biggest success.
This whisky is entirely made from rye; something that rarely occurs because it is a challenging grain to work with. During fermentation, a thick, sticky substance forms that few whisky makers dare to handle. But those who do are rewarded. So is Patrick. The 100 Rye is an explosion of flavor and a testament to Patrick's incredible expertise as a distiller.
So if you're looking for a fine Dutch whisky, you can always count on Millstone. The decades of experience are reflected in the high-quality whisky produced in the small Baarle-Nassau. Discover now why Millstone is highly regarded both at home and abroad. Which one can we deliver to your home?
