Hennessy is one of the biggest names in Cognac and is rightly a modern brand. Rock stars, rappers, and celebrities have embraced the brand: 'A fifth of Hennessy' is sung in hundreds of songs. The 'Henny' culture is a worldwide phenomenon and it is cool to be seen with a bottle. But this Cognac also has an age-old tradition that dates back to the 18th century. Learn all about this French legend now! At Tasting Collection we have a wide selection of Hennessy at favorable prices, so there’s always a great offer! Ordering is very easy online, and we will ensure your bottle of Hennessy is delivered quickly.
Although Hennessy may be the best known Cognac brand (it is indeed the largest producer of this drink), their story does not begin in France. Founder Richard Hennessy left County Cork in 1724 to serve in the French army of King Louis XV. After many years of service, he eventually found a home in the French Cognac region. There he established his own distillery in 1765. Before the end of that century, Hennessy Cognac was sold in the United States. A few decades later, the brand was also found in Russia and China.
Hennessy is at the origin of many of the classic age indications that are now used for Cognac. They were the first to use VSOP (at least 4 years old) and XO (at least 10 years old). The star rating system was also an invention of Hennessy, but it is not used much today.
Maison Hennessy is located on the banks of the Charente River in France. An arm with an axe is the logo, referring to Richard Hennessy's military past. For their Cognac, they use eaux-de-vie (grape distillate) from four of the main areas in the Cognac region: Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, and Fins Bois.
Today, it is master blender Renaud Fillioux who heads the Cognac production. Although Hennessy does not have its own vineyards (vineyard owners produce on behalf of the French company), centuries of savoir-faire ensure that Fillioux is an absolute expert in his field. He knows exactly what is in his Paradise (cellar) and how to blend these eaux-de-vie into a top-quality product. In total, there are 300,000 barrels in these wonderful cellars. Some of the oldest Cognacs date back to the 19th century!
It is possible to visit the birthplace of Hennessy Cognac. If you are ever nearby, it is certainly worth stepping out of the car. A visit begins with a boat trip on the river. After that, you learn more about the production of Cognac. There is even a Hennessy museum.
