About Distillery De Molenberg
Tradition
In the family farm at 'De Molenberg' in Blaasveld, the miller family Van Breedam grinds grain into genever. Since 1637, this family tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, until in 1927 the last distillate flows from the stills.
Louis Van Breedam and his sister Anna leave the Molenberg in 1872 and take over the Mechelen brewery that has provided beer to the Great Beguinage and the city since 1471. This starts a new family tradition.
Even now, the distillery and brewery are still in family hands and the tradition continues.
Innovation
Charles Leclef, fifth generation brewery owner since 1991, grows up in the brewery but also knows the former distillery in Blaasveld, where his uncle lives. He starts with a bold plan: to unite both family traditions, distilling and brewing.
Beer and whisky are both made from grain. Charles believes in a refined whisky distilled from the mash of the beer Gouden Carolus Tripel. In 2010, both family traditions - distilling and brewing - are united in a new project: Distillery De Molenberg.
First for Belgium
Anyone who wants to distill whisky follows the rules of the art. Distillery De Molenberg is the first whisky distillery in Belgium that works with two hand-hammered copper stills, known as pot stills. This slow, double distillation process guarantees a pure and refined distillate, which then ages in wooden barrels. After a minimum of 3 years of aging, this results in a refined whisky with a pure and balanced taste.
Thus the circle is complete: from the brewing tradition emerged the brewing activity and the brewery today provides the basis for distillation again.
