Edradour is mainly known as one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland. This makes it one of the most artisanally made whiskies. This distillery in Pitlochry has been around for almost two centuries, but is now the fulfilled dream of whisky lover Andrew Symington. Edradour is a single malt from the Scottish Highlands that every whisky lover must try at least once. Want to know more? Read on and immediately order a good bottle. Buying a nice Edradour online is naturally done at Tasting Collection.
The distillation of whisky in Scotland was once something mainly done by farmers. It was a way for farmers to earn something from their leftover grain. Or of course to make whisky for their own consumption. Edradour was once part of a farm as well. The current distillery has existed since 1837, although one of the involved farmers, Duncan Forbes, had been legally distilling whisky since 1825. The location in Perthshire, with plenty of water, hidden spots, and narrow roads towards Perth, also made it a perfect location for illegal distillers. There is a good chance that whisky was already being distilled well before 1825.
In the special history of Edradour, a mafia boss plays a minor role. In the 1930s, the distillery was in the hands of William Whitely, then a famous producer of blended whisky. They were doing well, especially in the United States, and strangely enough, gangster Frank Costello was appointed as a representative there. He was then the head of one of the five mafia families in New York. Shortly after, one of Costello's associates, Irving Haim, even became the owner of Edradour.
Today, however, Edradour is in the hands of Andrew Symington. This whisky lover bought Edradour in 2002, but had already been active as an independent bottler for years. Perhaps you have heard of Signatory Vintage? As a bottler, he was an established name, but making whisky himself remained a dream. With the purchase of Edradour, that dream came true for Symington.
Edradour is a small distillery where everything is still done manually. When you walk into the boiler room, you can see that not much has changed over the years. The mash tun is still made of cast iron and is more than 110 years old. There is even a Morton Refrigerator to cool the wort, the last remaining one in the whisky world. The two washbacks that Edradour has are both more than 50 years old. And you will also find the smallest traditional distillation kettle in all of Scotland. All of this ensures that there is no other whisky comparable to Edradour.
