Jim Beam is a classic American brand that has been around since the end of the 18th century. But not many people know it was founded by a German family. The name sounds little German at first glance, but that's because the spelling has been adjusted over time. Founder Jacob Beam was originally named Johannes Böhm. He sold his first barrels of corn whiskey, which was then called Old Jake Beam Sour Mash, around 1795.
The current master distiller is Fred Noe, the great-grandson of Jim Beam. Fred is only the seventh family member to hold this position. In 2005, he personally filled the 10 millionth barrel of Jim Beam! But he is also someone who loves innovation. The Jim Beam Red Stag, a whiskey liqueur with cherry flavor, is one of his greatest successes.
All bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. Jim Beam is a bourbon and can therefore also be called a whiskey. But what is the difference between bourbon and whiskey?
Whiskey is a very broad category and it must meet a number of rules to be called bourbon. First of all, it must be made in the United States. Also, at least 51% of the grains used must consist of corn. Furthermore, it must not be distilled to a higher alcohol percentage than 80%. When it goes into the barrel, that percentage can only be 62.5%. Bourbon must also be at least two years old. Lastly: nothing may be added, such as flavoring or colorings.
The range of Jim Beam is rightly enormous. Of course, this beautiful American company makes excellent bourbon, starting with the Jim Beam White Labelor the deliciousRye. But they are also not afraid to push the boundaries, for example by adding a flavor. What do you think of Maple, Apple of the enormously popular Honey?
