Nikka Japanese Whisky
It is no longer a secret that Japanese whisky is of absolute world class. One of the best and largest producers of Japanese whisky is Nikka. This company owns several iconic distilleries, such as Yoichi and Miyagikyo. Founder Masataka Taketsuru is even regarded as the father of the Japanese whisky industry. History of Nikka Whisky
The story of Nikka Whisky begins with Masataka Taketsuru, a young Japanese man who traveled to Scotland to learn the art of whisky making. He graduated as a chemist and apprenticed at various Scottish distilleries. During this time, he developed not only a deep understanding of the whisky-making process but also a passion for the artisanal craft of blending. During his time in Scotland, Masataka fell in love not only with whisky but also with Rita Cowan, a Scottish woman who would become his future wife. Their love and shared passion for whisky fueled Masataka's desire to bring the art of whisky making to Japan. Back in Japan, he continued his mission to create the perfect whisky that would embody the Scottish tradition.
In 1934, the first Nikka distillery was established in Yoichi, on the northern island of Hokkaido. This location was chosen because of the similarities between the climate of Yoichi and that of the Scottish Highlands. This resulted in Japanese whiskies with a robust and smoky flavor, similar to that of Scotch single malts. Masataka's goal was to produce whisky that remained true to the Scottish style but with a Japanese twist.
In addition to Yoichi, Nikka opened another distillery in 1969, called Miyagikyo. Located on the main island of Honshu, Miyagikyo produces whiskies with a softer and more elegant flavor, similar to the Scottish Lowland style. The combination of these two distilleries with different flavor profiles embodied Masataka's vision of intertwining both Scottish and Japanese elements in his whiskies.
Over the years, Nikka Whisky began to gain recognition for the exceptional quality of its products. The brand won various awards and received recognition from whisky lovers around the world.
