Louis Roederer is based in Reims. The house is one of the oldest champagne houses and was founded in 1776 as Dubois Père & Fils. In 1833, Louis Roederer inherited the company and named it after himself. Roederer owns 214 hectares of vineyards and thus can provide 66% of its own grape needs. The rest is purchased from farmers. The use of a lot of pinot noir in the blends makes Roederer a house that works in the tradition of Reims. Like Bollinger and Krug, Roederer only uses the first and grand cru’s of the champagne and still lets the vintage cuvées age on oak barrels for some time. Notable is that Roederer uses the 'taille' (second pressing) of the Chardonnay. This is sweeter than the Cuvée (first pressing) and contains fewer unwanted tannins in champagne. The champagnes of Louis Roederer are typical of the 'style de Reims' where the champagne houses have always used a lot of pinot noir. Louis Roederer is a 'pinot-noir' house, just like Mumm, Veuve Clicquot, and Laurent-Perrier.
