Making a good blended whisky is not for everyone. You need to have a lot of knowledge, excellent olfactory and taste abilities, and of course a great network to buy the right whisky. Someone who possessed all these traits was William Sanderson. This drinks producer from Leith, Scotland created the original VAT 69 in 1882.
He worked with a lot of precision. Of course, Sanderson knew exactly how to assemble a good whisky. But he wanted more certainty before presenting his life's work to the outside world. So he first made 100 different recipes. Then he hired a number of expert whisky specialists to choose the best recipe. They eventually chose the 69th recipe. Hence the name: VAT 69.
In addition to VAT 69, Sanderson has a huge legacy in the whisky world. Within 5 years of making his famous blend (which quickly became popular), he became a co-owner of Glen Gariocha distillery that still makes great single malt whisky to this day. To break the monopoly on grain whisky, he also founded the North Britishdistillery in 1885.
Since the launch of VAT 69 at the end of the 19th century, this special Scotch whisky appears in the most unlikely places - both in reality and fiction. In 1914, the explorer Ernest Shackleton, for example, took a supply of VAT 69 on his Trans-Antarctic expedition for "medicinal and festive purposes."
But old bottles of VAT 69 also often appear in movies and television series. In the World War II drama Band of Brothers, for example, Captain Lewis Nixon goes to great lengths to get a bottle of his beloved whisky. But even outside Hollywood, you regularly see the whisky back. VAT 69 is particularly popular in India, so it's no surprise that many Bollywood villains drank that whisky in the '70s.
A beautiful bottle of this whisky looks great in any liquor cabinet! Fortunately, it's a breeze to get your own bottle delivered through the Tasting Collection webshop. And at a nice sharp price too. Place your order now (it's very simple), and we'll make sure you quickly enjoy a delicious glass of VAT 69.
