History of Oban
It is unusual for a distillery to be located both on the coast and in a built-up area. However, the history of Oban is closely intertwined with that of the town of the same name. The distillery is almost as old as the coastal town of Oban, with a history dating back to the end of the 18th century.
The distillery was founded in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevensen on the site of a former brewery. In the 1800s, the reputation of the distillery grew with each decade. However, getting whisky from Oban to the rest of the United Kingdom proved to be a challenge. This changed in 1888 when a railway was finally built between Oban and Glasgow.
Oban is now owned by Diageo. This large beverage corporation devised a great marketing campaign in the 1980s. Under the name Classic Malts Selection Scottish single malts received a huge boost. Until then, blends were mainly consumed. Oban was one of the six original members of the Classic Malts Selection, despite being one of the smallest distilleries owned by Diageo.
Which region does Oban come from?
Oban is a distillery in the west of Scotland and is officially located in the Highlands. This is by far the largest Scottish whisky region in terms of area. A wide variety of whisky is also made in the Highlands.
You will encounter whiskies with rugged coastal influences, but also softer variants like Dalwhinnie and Glenmorangie. Oban probably lies in terms of taste experience somewhere between those two extremes.
Oban & Game of Thrones
To celebrate the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, Diageo and HBO launched a series of limited whiskies in honor of the show. Each of the whiskies is paired with one of the iconic houses of Westeros. Oban was also part of that series of whiskies.
The Oban distillery is located at the foot of a cliff. From there, you look out over the bay. It is a natural boundary between the Highlands and the Scottish islands. Just as Castle Black, the home of the Night's Watch, lies between Westeros and the sprawling lands beyond The Wall, the cliff at Oban forms a natural separation between land and sea.
