The craft of Royal Lochnagar
Everything at Royal Lochnagar indicates that this distillery produces a classic, heavy whisky style. Especially the two small stills and the so-called worm tubs. Strangely enough, the new make spirit from Royal Lochnagar is on the lighter side of the spectrum. This is the result of clear wort and long fermentation, but mainly the way the stills and worm tubs are used.
Distillation is a slow and patient process, allowing for as much copper contact as possible. After distillation, the doors of the stills are deliberately opened, giving the copper a chance to recover. The worm tubs (where the alcohol condenses) work with hot water, resulting in more copper contact. The result is a rich, approachable single malt that mostly matures in sherry casks.
A royal distillery visit
One of the funniest anecdotes in whisky history comes from Lochnagar, as the distillery was still called at the beginning of 1848. Later that year, proud founder John Begg became a true purveyor to the royal court and was allowed to name his distillery Royal Lochnagar. He owed this to the hospitality he showed towards Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and three of their children.
Royal Lochnagar is located next to Balmoral Castle, the summer residence of the British royal family. The region had a lot of trouble with illegal distillers in the early years of the distillery, who were not pleased that a legal operation was suddenly set up. Three times, a distillery was set on fire.
But Begg outsmarted them with a brilliant move: he invited The Queen for what is also called the very first distillery visit in history. Not long after, Lochnagar received the title 'Royal'. No illegal distiller dared to set Lochnagar on fire now.
Royal Lochnagar and Game of Thrones
To celebrate the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones Diageo and HBO released a series of limited whiskeys in honor of the show. Each of the whiskeys was paired with one of the iconic houses of Westeros. Royal blood is what makes the combination between House Baratheon and Royal Lochnagar a logical one, as King Robert Baratheon ruled the Seven Kingdoms from the Iron Throne.
