Many distilleries choose to only mention the age on the label, but Knockando approaches this in a slightly different way. This distillery in the Speyside region indicates in a very different way how old itsScottish whiskyis. The single malt from Knockando has a light, accessible flavor profile where the flavors of the barley dominate. Do you want to know more about Knockando? Knockando was established in 1898, but the distillery had to close its doors soon after. This was true for many distilleries at that time, as the whisky industry was hit by a severe crisis. Fortunately, the distillery was bought by new owners a few years later. In the 1960s, Knockando came under the management of Justerini & Brooks and since then the whisky has been an important part of the well-known J&B blends.
The philosophy behind the current bottlings of Knockando is quite unique for the Scottish whisky industry. Each whisky has a vintage, meaning that only the whisky from one single season (production year) is in the bottle. The label on every bottle of Knockando not only states the age but also the year in which the whisky was produced. Each bottle of Knockando is therefore an interesting snapshot of a specific year. This light, delicate single malt distinguishes itself from others. Speyside whiskies.
Although 1.29 million liters of whisky per year sounds like a huge amount, it is relatively small compared to other distilleries. Moreover, only 8% of the total production is reserved for single malt whisky each year. Knockando is especially popular in Spain and France. The rest of Knockando's production is destined for blended whisky from its parent company Diageo.
Knockando has a total of four copper stills, while the barley used is very lightly peated. So lightly that it can't even be distinctly tasted in the final whisky. Until 1968, Knockando had its own malting floor that was used to malt the barley, but now this is done at a central location.
