The story of Hendrick's Gin goes as follows. On a lovely summer afternoon, David Stewart, a renowned Scottish whisky distiller, visited his good friend Janet Sheed Roberts. This remarkable woman is also known as Aunty Janie. She was the oldest woman in Scotland when she passed away in 2012 at the age of 110. Moreover, she was the granddaughter of William Grant, the founder of well-known distilleries such as Balvenie and Glenfiddich. David Stewart works for the current William Grant & Sons.
During his visit to Aunty Janie, David Stewart had a delicious cucumber sandwich in the rose garden. That combination of flavors and scents inspired the creation of Hendrick's Gin. David Stewart approached Lesley Grace, who developed the now world-famous recipe. She is still the master distiller of Hendrick's Gin today.
Lovers of a good Gin & Tonic are often looking for the so-called 'perfect serve'. This is often seen as the recipe to mix a Gin & Tonic with a specific gin. Usually, the choice of a tonic is very important. After all, tonic usually makes up three-quarters of your Gin & Tonic, so it is important that it is of good quality.
For Hendrick's, there is not necessarily a specific brand recommended. We suggest for example Fever-Tree or Thomas Henry instead. Make your Gin & Tonic with 50ml Hendrick's Gin, 150ml Tonic, and 3 thin slices of cucumber. Want to be adventurous once? Then you should definitely try the Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic!
Rose petals and cucumber are the most well-known botanicals of Hendrick's Gin, but there are another 11 botanicals used to give this gin its distinctive flavor: juniper berries, angelica root, coriander seed, tail pepper, iris root, chamomile, caraway seed, elderflower, meadowsweet, and lemon and orange peel. The botanicals are produced in two different types of stills, a copper Bennett still from 1860 and a John Dore Carter-Head still from 1948.
