The name of the Glenlossie distillery is derived from 'vale of the Lossie'. The distillery was founded by John Duff, who had gained experience at the Glendronach distillery. In 1876, he decided, together with two friends, to start the construction of the distillery. In 1896, John Duff retired from the company. H. Mackay took over the distillery with his cousin and the name was changed to The Glenlossie-Glenlivet Distillery Co. They built their own railway for the transport of barrels, barley, and whisky, and new warehouses were constructed. Due to a lack of barley, Glenlossie shut down during the First World War and in 1919 the distillery reopened. In 1929, Glenlossie was struck by a major fire, but as they had a horse-drawn fire engine, the damage was limited. Between 1950 and 1960, a significant amount of money was invested in Glenlossie and in 1962 two new stills were added. The stillhouse of Glenlossie has three wash stills and three spirit stills. The new spirit is exclusively aged in refill casks. The malt is almost exclusively used for the blends of, among others, John Haig.
