About Glen Keith
After construction, the distillery was opened by Chivas Brothers in 1958. That made Glen Keith the first newly built distillery of the 20th century. With the choice of location in the existing grain mill "Old Keith Mill," the old buildings and the artificial diversion of the river Isla, previously powering the watermill, are still in use today. In 1970, two more stills were added. There are nine washbacks, made of stainless steel. Glen Keith was the first to install a gas-fired boiler instead of the traditional coal-fired one in 1970. They were also the first distillery to use computers during the entire distillation process. In 1999, the distillery was closed for a while due to overproduction. There are no warehouses on the distillery site. The new spirit is taken by tanker trucks to other warehouses of Chivas & Glenlivet Ltd. in the town of Keith and put into casks there. The malt is aged in refill and bourbon casks that come straight from America. The brewing water comes from Balloch Hill. Most of Glen Keith's malt is used for blending house brand blended whiskies such as Chivas Regal, used. Glen Keith has been mothballed since 2001.
