No fewer than one hundred malt whisky distilleries came into being in the green valleys of Speyside. Many of them, like Glen Elgin, were built during the boom just before 1900.
But as the chimneys grew taller, there was already trouble in glasses in the whisky industry. The designer of Glen Elgin, the renowned architect Charles Doig from Elgin, already predicted that this would be the last distillery built in Speyside for 50 years. And even that was on the modest side, as it took another 60 years before Tormore would be the next.
In Glen Elgin, at least, the best was kept for last. In the past hundred years, little has changed. In the 1930s, Glen Elgin became part of Scottish Malt Distillers, of which it became an important component of the famousPlaceholder Stringblend.
The first fifty years saw little innovation, although one change was essential: the location was partly chosen because of the possibility to make use of the ample water supply from the Glen Burn to drive the turbine that provided electricity for the machines. For that reason, electricity via the rural power grid was not needed until 1950.
In the early sixties of the 20th century, the much-needed investment came and four boilers were added to the two existing ones. Glen Elgin™ became available as a single malt and from 1977, exports began of a 12-year-old whisky, mainly to Italy and Japan.
