Why the name Four Roses?
The name Four Roses has a special and romantic background. Long before he founded his own distillery, Paul Jones Jr. fell madly in love with an American beauty. He proposed to her, but had to wait for an answer. During a grand party shortly after the proposal, she wore a corsage of four red roses. That was her special way of giving the yes answer. Out of admiration and love, Paul Jones Jr. named his bourbon after that exceptionally romantic moment.
How is Four Roses made?
Four Roses is the only bourbon distillery that combines 5 of its own yeast strains with 2 different grain recipes. This means that they can make a total of 10 bourbons, all with a diverse flavor. For their most popular bourbon, which is also known as Four Roses Yellow Labelsometimes all 10 recipes are used.
The most important grain for every bourbon is corn and this is no different with this whiskey. In addition, master distiller Jim Rutledge also uses rye and malted barley. The difference in the 2 grain recipes lies in the proportions between those grains. For one recipe, 75 percent corn is used, while for the other recipe it is scaled back to 60 percent.
The 5 different types of yeast in turn provide different flavor influences. One, for example, gives off subtle fruit flavors, while the other adds more spiciness or floral notes.
