Crown Royal is one of the few whisky brands that can rightly be called royal. This Canadian whisky was specially created for a royal visit in the 1930s. Many years later, it is by far the most famous whisky from Canada, which also won one of the most prestigious awards in the whisky world. Crown Royal is the perfect whisky for both experienced enthusiasts and novice whisky drinkers. Get to know this royal drink now!
Which whiskey can also claim to be made exclusively for a king? Crown Royal may be the only one that can make that claim. The very first exquisite blend of Crown Royal consisted of no less than 50 specially selected whiskeys. These were bottled in a beautiful glass decanter and enveloped in a purple velvet pouch.
But in honor of what exactly? The very first Canadian tour of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1939! The whiskey was served aboard the royal train, as a symbol of the hard-working nature and sincere character of the Canadian people. This unparalleled marketing effort paid off wonderfully, because to this day Crown Royal embodies Canadian whisky: a smooth taste and fit for royalty.
This Canadian whiskey is made in Gimli, a small town on the shores of Lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba. About 80 percent of the grains (rye, corn, and barley) are grown in Manitoba and the surrounding provinces. These natural ingredients are accustomed to challenging weather conditions - temperatures often drop below freezing.
In total, Crown Royal is a combination of five different recipes. These are produced using twelve distillation columns. Aging of the whiskey takes place in new barrels, but also in barrels that have been used before. Because these barrels age in a climate with large temperature fluctuations, a lot of flavor is extracted from the oak barrels.
The year 2016 was a special year for Crown Royal. That was the moment when their Northern Harvest Rye was declared World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray. He did this in his Whisky Bible. In this annual book, thousands of whiskeys are rated by Jim Murray, who is sometimes seen as the Robert Parker of the wine world.
The influence of Jim Murray quickly became clear after the publication of his book. In no time, the Northern Harvest Rye was sold out all over the world.
