Pinot Noir is above all a demanding grape variety: vulnerable, requiring constant attention and the wines it produces require a very long maturation period. Bollinger manages over 150 hectares of vineyards, largely certified as Grand Cru and Premier Cru, underscoring the high quality of the grapes.
The house follows a classic production method: only the first pressing of the grapes is used and the initial fermentation takes place mainly in oak barrels. This approach is labor-intensive but contributes to Bollinger's recognizable style: powerful, complex, and refined. Additionally, the wines age longer than legally required, providing extra depth and balance.
A history of taste
A remarkable chapter in history is that of Madame Elisabeth Bollinger. After her husband's death, she took over management until 1971, guided the house through the turbulent Second World War, and promoted the brand worldwide.
In 2010, an inventory of the cellars revealed a forgotten stock of bottles and magnums of reserve sparkling wine. Archive research made it clear that the oldest vintage dated back to 1830.
With nearly two hundred years of experience, a quirky style, and unwavering focus on quality, Bollinger remains a fixture in the Champagne landscape.
The James Bond connection
Bollinger has an iconic status, partly thanks to James Bond. The champagne first appears in the novelDiamonds are Foreverand debuts on the silver screen inMoonraker(1979). In a scene in Venice, Bond sees an ice bucket with the Bollinger logo and says: “If it’s the '69, then you were expecting me.”
The Champagne is regularly served at prestigious events. That visibility contributes to the international allure of the house.
