The history of Beefeater takes us back to 1863, when founder James Burrough bought the Chelsea distillery in London for 400 pounds. There he began producing his own distinctive gin. Burrough experimented a lot with new production processes and different botanicals. Eventually, he devised a specific recipe that led to a bold, powerful gin. He called that gin Beefeater.
The original recipe was first mentioned in 1895. More than a century later, Beefeater is still made in almost the same way. A total of nine botanicals are used: juniper berries, angelica root, angelica seeds, coriander seeds, licorice, almonds, iris root, and orange and lemon peels. The flavor that this produces is still a great source of inspiration for the popular London Dry style today.
The current master distiller of Beefeater is Desmond Payne, who has been at the helm since 1995. He introduced a soaking process for the different natural botanicals that lasts 24 hours. This allows the flavors to be extracted from the botanicals as much as possible. The distillation itself takes about 8 hours. Afterwards, the gin is sent to Scotland, where it can be bottled at 40%.
The name Beefeater is a reference to the Yeoman Warders, the ceremonial guardians of the Tower of London. This tower once served as a state prison but is now mainly known because the Crown Jewels of the British monarchy are displayed there. It was unusual in the late 19th century to name a gin brand after anything other than the family name or production location.
Over the years, Beefeater has significantly expanded its range. The classic London Dry Gin is still the absolute bestseller, but gin lovers today have much more choice than a few years ago. One of the most popular new additions is, for example, the Beefeater Pink Gin. This award-winning strawberry gin is based on the traditional recipe and tastes great in Pink & Tonic, Pink Daiquiri, or a Pink Collins.
To help you with your choice, we provide some explanations and background information for each of the Beefeater Gins. So feel free to take a look around in our webshop before placing your order. Enjoy your purchase!
