Tequila

A wide range of tequila

Tequila is one of the most important export products of Mexico. We in the Netherlands contribute to this, because we love to drink it. Every Dutch café has at least a few bottles behind the bar. And also in Dutch households there is often a broken bottle to make delicious Margaritas with. With us in the web shop you will undoubtedly find a bottle that suits your taste. With Don Julio, Patron and Corralejo, we carry brands that have a great heritage. We also stock the more modern tequilas, such as Casamigos, which was founded by Hollywood star George Clooney, or Kendall Jenner's Tequila, 818 Tequila. An absolute hype right now is the super premium Tequila from Clase Azul.

History of Tequila

The history of tequila is inextricably linked to the town of the same name in the Mexican province of Jalisco. Like everywhere else in Central America, the wild agave (an overgrown succulent) was also an important part of the culture centuries ago. Tequila as we know it today is partly due to the Spanish conquistadors. They introduced the distillation technique to Mexico. The Spanish distilled the agave wine of the Mexicans, creating a stronger drink. This was given the name vino mezcal.

Internationally, tequila did not become known until the late 19th century. With the advent of railroads, some producers exported their tequila to the United States. This is also known as the first Tequila Boom. However, due to the Prohibition and the Mexican Revolution, tequila fell somewhat back into oblivion. It wasn't until the 1990s that tequila recaptured a large market share again. Today, it is impossible to imagine this drink without it.

This is how tequila is made

Tequila is made from the blue agave (also called agave tequilana ). This plant takes 10 years to mature. It is the fruit of the plant that is distilled into tequila. This piña weighs about 25 to 50 pounds and is first steamed in industrial, stainless steel high-pressure pans. This process creates sugars, which can later be converted to alcohol.

The conversion of sugars to alcohol is called fermentation (or fermentation) and takes an average of three to five days. This produces a fermented pulp and juice with a low alcohol content. Distillation in boilers or columns raises that percentage. After that, producers can still choose to age their tequila in wood, but that is not an obligation.

The Different Types of Tequila

The label of a bottle of tequila can tell you a lot about its contents. But then you have to know what the different terms mean. Below we explain everything exactly:

  • Silver or Blanco: transparent in color and unripened. Here you taste the flavor of the blue agave best.
  • Gold, Oro or Joven: sometimes this is aged tequila mixed with unaged tequila, but usually this is the same tequila as a Silver or Blanco, only colored with caramel.
  • Reposado or Rested: this type of tequila has been aged for at least 2 and up to 12 months.
  • Añejo or Aged: this type of tequila is aged for at least 1 year in oak barrels of up to 600 liters.
  • Extra Añejo: a tequila that is aged for at least 3 years.
  • Mixto or Puro: By regulation, tequila must consist of at least 51% percent agave alcohol. Luxury tequila usually consists entirely of agave and is therefore called Puro. In cheaper tequila, this is often not the case, hence the term Mixto.

The difference between Tequila and Mezcal

A tequila is actually a Mezcal, but not every Mezcal is a Tequila.... Huh? How about this?
Tequila is subject to strict rules, for example, it must be produced in the city of Tequila, or in the neighboring highlands of Jalisco. Also, it must be made from blue Weberagave and have more than half, i.e. at least 51% agave juice used in its production. Mezcal is actually any drink made from Agave, so Tequila technically is too, but not every Mezcal meets the specifications to call itself a Tequila. Usually Mezcal is again distinguished by a slightly more smoky flavor when traditional prodcutution methods are used. This is because the agaves are roasted in underground pits before distillation which imparts a smoky flavor to the agave. Also, the use of varieties other than blue weber agave gives Mezcal a different taste than Tequila.

C'est toujours un plaisir de commander chez vous. Excellent service, site web très clair, et l'achat est joliment emballé, même s'il ne s'agit pas d'un cadeau. La possibilité d'ajouter un message personnel est également un avantage considérable.
