Togouchi - Pure Malt

Japan

Togouchi – Pure Malt is a whisky created by Chugoku Jozo, a Japanese company that imports single malts from different distilleries, including some from Scotland. They subsequently age this whisky in the former city of Togouchi. Chugoku Jozo matures their whisky in a 362-meter-long former train tunnel. The temperature in this tunnel is always 15 degrees. According to the company, not all Japanese people like the flavour of peat that is often prevalent in Scotch whisky. That’s why the whiskies are blended into a coherent, balanced and mild pure malt.

Mars Maltage - Cosmo

Japan

Mars Maltago Cosmo is a blended malt, consisting of both Japanese and Scotch whisky. It’s unknown from where the Scotch whiskies are sourced, but the Japanese whisky is produced at Mars Shinshu, a distillery with a decades long history. It lies at an altitude of almost 800 meters in the Japanese Alps. During winter time, temperatures drop to 15 degrees Celsius below zero. Mars Maltage Cosmo is a fine example of how the Japanese search for ultimate balance in their whisky.

Akashi - Red

Japan

The Eigashima Distillery (or White Oak Distillery) was founded in 1888, originally to produce sake. A few decades later this Japanese producer obtained a license for whisky, but it took them until 2007 to release their first single malt. Akashi is the only whisky made by a Toji (master in the art of sake making). Akashi Red is a blended whisky made from malt and grain whiskies. It also is very likely that this is a young whisky, although no official age statement is mentioned on the label.

Nikka Taketsuru - Pure Malt

Japan

A non-age-statement expression of Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt whisky, named after the company's founder, Masataka Taketsuru. Released in 2014, this bottling is a blend of malts aged 10 years on average in different types of oak casks. A high percentage of Miyagikyo malt gives this whisky a fresh fruity character, joined by mature aromas from an important sherry cask influence on the malt.
